Inclement Weather Delays Registration for WyoTech’s Laramie Campus

LARAMIE, Wyoming — For the protection of its students, WyoTech's Laramie campus will temporarily postpone registration until Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 due to inclement weather.

Snow showers and temperatures in the single digits are expected to continue over the New Year weekend and authorities are asking students to delay returning to the campus to allow for safer travel of current and new students.

Housing will be available for any students arriving over the weekend, with classes resuming on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at the regular time.

Laramie Instructor Wins WyoTech Dream Maker Award

The Dream Maker Award recognizes excellence in teaching, dedication to students’ career goals.

Frank Dettmers, a collision instructor at WyoTech - Laramie, has energy and enthusiasm that is contagious to his students and co-workers. He incorporates his life experiences into his lectures, which makes it easier for his students to grasp the curriculum. Dettmers’ talent for motivating and engaging students in classroom and community activities recently earned him the 2010 Dream Maker Award.

The Dream Maker Award, presented by WyoTech’s parent company, Corinthian Colleges Inc., recognizes extraordinary instructors who have changed student lives for the better through education. Dettmers was one of eight instructors selected to receive the 2010 award from more than 100 campuses across the U.S. and Canada.

“Frank is a true student advocate,” said Guy Warpness, president of WyoTech’s Laramie campus. “He takes pride in his students’ success and has been instrumental in aligning graduates with industry leaders. In addition, his fundraising efforts have helped the Laramie campus earn the U.S. Presidential Honor Roll Award for Community Service for the past three years. Frank and his students have touched the lives of many. He is most deserving of the Dream Maker Award.”

Dettmers is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in both Non-Structural Analysis and Damage Repair and Structural Analysis and Damage Repair. He also holds certifications from companies such as Sherwin-Williams and General Motors.

As a lead instructor in collision and refinishing, Dettmers teaches four courses in the program. On weekends, he often leads advanced training workshops that give his students special skills in addition to the curriculum. He also holds review sessions before and after his classes to ensure that his students get the personal attention they need to excel.

Dettmers has earned the respect of his students and when asked how he connects with them, he responds, “I treat them the way I would want my own kids to be treated if they were in a school a thousand miles away.”

Dettmers dedication extends beyond the classroom to community service efforts where his classes are consistently top contributors to such events as Relay for Life, a campus blood drive and a fundraiser for a hospitalized student. As one student put it, “It was Mr. Dettmers who motivates us to volunteer and participate in fundraising. He made us realize that together we can truly make a difference.”

Behold! The World's Biggest Diesel Engine!

The world’s biggest diesel engine can’t be found on a car, a truck, an earthmover or even a locomotive. The world’s biggest diesel engine is the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C14 turbocharged two-stroke, which currently powers giant supertankers and cargo ships throughout the world. Built in Switzerland, it is the most powerful and reportedly the most efficient engine of the 21st century.

1950's Era Snow Train Makes Final Run at Laramie

While the winters in Wyoming can still be fierce, one can only imagine the grit and guts it took for men and women to keep the passenger and freight trains running out West during the 50's.

Laramie, Wyoming is the proud owner of a vintage Union Pacific steam engine, wedge snowplow, caboose and a bunk car built by Ralston Steel Company. The historic train is being moved from various locations in Laramie and will be showcased at RailroadHeritage Park, which is adjacent to the historic Union Pacific Dept.

Railroad Heritage Park is a joint project between the Laramie Railroad Depot Association and the city of Laramie.

All the remaining equipment on the train is 50 years or older. Once assembled, it will be nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Historic Downtown Laramie.

Students at WyoTech Laramie get a huge hand of applause for the hard work and effort to give new life and being to this historic relic from the past. The snow train serves, not only a historic function, but is a testament to the durability of the machinery built over 50 years ago that can exist and still function in today's modern world.

WyoTech Students Strut Their Stuff and Restore Antique Fire Engine

Students at WyoTech Laramie are up to their old tricks again! This time, students from the school's Collision Refinishing Technology - Street Rod and Custom Fabrication program are working overtime and blasting off layers of paint to restore a Nott Steam engine purchased by the city of Laramie in 1908. The engine has been sitting in storage for the last 20 years -just waiting for a talented group of six individuals to come along to restore its former grandeur.

The goal is to repaint the engine in maroon and red with gold and black floral designs and striping. The engine's original five-foot tall wooden wheels and the empty tongue bring back vivid memories of yester-year.

Such steam fire engines were built by only a handful of companies as early as the 1830's. The central element of this antique engine is a large coal-fired broiler that when hot, produced steam to work a pump that sucked water from a tank or hydrant through a hose onto the fire. The operation was quick back in the day, and could be made ready in just a few minutes.

Gary Egge, project manager for the Laramie Fire Department, said Laramie's was a 1907 model that was used into the 1920s. It was loaned to Cheyenne in 1942 for display, and then requested back in 1987. It was returned in 1990 and has been sitting in storage at the Albany County Fairgrounds since.

Travis Bird, a WyoTech student from Brighton, Colo., said he and the other half - dozen students involved in the project have been researching the engine on the Internet. So far they've learned that not many still exist and that information about those that do is in short supply.

Work on the engine involved peeling back the original layers. The next plan of attack is to spray-paint over the years of different colors. It's tough work, and once it's done it will look even better than it did the day on the first day it was commissioned for use.

The Origin of the Hot Rod

Car customizing is a tradition that dates back almost as far as the invention of the automobile itself. Although now practiced worldwide, car customizing is rooted in the distinctly American values of individuality, competition and free-enterprise.

Here’s a quick overview of how the great American “Hot Rod” came to be:

• During the Great Depression of the 1930s, new cars were often too expensive to purchase. So many young car enthusiasts began to “soup up” older cars with spare parts and components salvaged from local junk yards.

• What was simply car restoration quickly turned into car enhancement, with young builders experimenting with new and better ways to increase vehicle speed, be it through replacing original engines with more powerful V8s to removing all non-essential components to lighten the vehicle and improve aerodynamics.

• Much of this activity was focused in Southern California, where the flat, dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles were a perfect spot for car junkies to race their cars in competition—and to do so all year round.

• The term “hot rod” entered the national vocabulary in the late 1930s. Its specific origins are unknown, although it may be a contraction of the term “hot roadster,” or may refer to the connecting rods or pushrods inside the often over-heated engines.

• “Hot rodding” took a short “time-out” during WWII, then came roaring back with a vengeance in 1946. Between 1946 and the late 1950s, car customizing, drag racing and street racing exploded in popularity along with the post-war youth culture that also gave birth to rock-and-roll.

• By the 1970s, the emphasis has switched from mere speed to customized exteriors, interiors and paint jobs.

Car Customizing As a Career

Today, car customizing can be a full-time occupation. Many businesses are dedicated to creating custom “dream machines” that employ the latest ideas in automotive design and technology. But while the tools have changed, today’s car fabricators carry the same passions, drive and imagination as the original hot rodders of 70 years ago.

Alan Cardozo--A Man on a Mission

Alan Cardozo is an Admissions Representative who has a mission in life to make a positive difference in the lives of students. He isn't just interested in filling a seat, but takes the time to make sure the student is in the correct seat.

What separates Alan from the pack is that he understands how to work with his hands. He also knows first-hand what the industry expects and demands.

Alan Cardozo has a love for Jeeps! Combine this with a guy who believes in quality education and "telling it like it is" to students eager to find a career direction-and you have a personal story students want to hear from a guy they can respect and relate to!

Though Alan didn't graduate from WyoTech, he knows what a quality education and quality instructors can provide for students. At one time Alan sat in a classroom just like the students, and when he speaks, it's from experience.

Over the past several years, Alan has been building what he and others consider to be a one-of-a-kind Four Door Jeep Wrangler. Alan didn't like the size and seating capacity of the new Four Door Wrangler-so he modified the problem and built his own.

Alan stated, "Since starting this custom build I have seen a few similar on the web, but nothing like mine in regards to design, function and with that factory production look. It would have been easy for me to just box in the frame, buy some side panels, throw some sheet metal down and call it good.

I didn't want to do that and focused on the many details that the factory may have considered by using a factory frame, or should I say frames and body mounts. I just wanted to maintain a clean developed look; and then I designed factory looking rear doors, interior panels and so much more. It's truly in the details that set me apart from the rest."

Alan will be the first to say it is great having a career and not just a job. However, he believes that having fun and making a respectable income in the transportation industry is awesome!

As many of you may have noticed, the weather has a hard time making up its mind in Laramie, but if you don't like the weather...just wait a minute!

Steamboat Snowboard Trip - April 14th

Staying Active in Laramie

Over 800 different students participated in extracurricular activities in Phase I. These ranged from Community Service and Life Skills where extra credit is awarded to Intramural Sports to out of town trips including: Steamboat Resort, the X-Games in Aspen, and a Monster Truck show in Colorado.

We hope to have even more participants in the upcoming phase! Here are a few activities to look forward to:

Guitar Hero 2/Texas Hold 'Em Tournament - February 17th @ 3pm
Come out to the Student Center and discover who is the true Guitar Hero. Enter to win or just see what it's all about...or show us your poker face. The winner of each table will advance to the champions table to compete for the WyoTech Poker Championship!

Steamboat Snowboard/Ski Trip - March
About $50 will buy you a lift ticket, transporation to and from one of the premiere resorts in the country, and lunch! Whether you are an experienced rider or just want try it out, this is a great deal!

Alcohol Awareness Week - March 5th - 8th
WyoTech is partnering with the University of Wyoming to educate our students about repsonsible alcohol behaviors. Students will receive extra credit for attendance as well as the opportunity to participate in fun activities including a "Beer Goggle" golf cart course.

Saturday Seminars - February - March
Knowledgeable WyoTech instructors volunteer their time to teach seminars on topics ranging from Carburetors to Fiberglass to Metalurgy. Students receive a certificate of completion for their attendance and participation!

Come see the Student Center and enjoy some FREE Chili! The Open House will be held Saturday January 6th from 4pm - 8pm. See our weight lifting/fitness equipment, big screen TV, foosball, ping pong, pool, shuffleboard, and indoor golf net. You can also check out our c0-op equipment which is available for rental. This includes: backpacks, tents, mountain bikes, sleeping bags, and rafts.

For those of you who enjoy a little friendly competition or just want to stay active, come out to the Intramural Open House from 3pm - 5pm. Intramurals are held at the Civic Center on 710 Garfield, but you'll want to come in through the Custer St. entrance. See where you will play Intramurals, sign up, and shoot around!

Student Thanksgiving Dinner - November 23

Struggling with plans for Thanksgiving? It can be hectic to try to make it home and back over the holiday weekend, so come join us. The annual WyoTech Thanksgiving Dinner will be held from 11:00am - 1:00pm on November 23rd in the Diesel Shop. This FREE dinner is hosted by WyoTech staff for students and their families. Over 600 attended last year. Tickets are available in Student Services.

Metallurgy Seminar - November 18th

Develop your metal working skills and knowledge. Learn techniques for bending and manipulating metal. This seminar will be taught by Randy Calhoun in the Chassis Fab C Class on West Campus starting at 9am.

You will need to sign up in advance for this at the Student Services Office...don't wait! Over 200 students attended Jeff Homan's Carburetor Seminar and space will be limited.

Steamboat Big 6 Pass

Snowboarders and Skiers - On Monday October 23rd, representatives from Steamboat will be on campus to sell their "Big 6 Pass" which is only available for college students. This pass includes 6 days at one of the premier resorts in the nation for only $99! Passes will be available at the following times and locations:

Raising Awareness

Almost 500 WyoTech students attended Alcohol Awareness Day on Saturday. Students were given a free Alcohol Awareness T-Shirt and participated in over a dozen booths and activities. Students were educated on responsible drinking limits as well as the physical, financial, legal, and emotional consequences of excessive drinking.

A major theme was "0-1-3". This stands for 0 DUIs, 1 drink per hour maximum, and 3 drinks per night maximum. Following these limits will help students to stay below the level of impairment.

As always, the students especially enjoyed driving golf carts course while wearing drunk goggles and navigating the course in the "Drunk Goggle Challenge".

A swap meet, jalapeno eating competition, and a "Techer Toughman" were also included in the day's events. These events were free to enter and featured prizes donated by local businesses.
